Trip Fiction: Kiwis & Koalas

If you’re anything like me, reading a book in a place you’re traveling to brings it to life in a whole new way. I made a reading list of 25 Novels Around the World to accompany my trip around the world onboard the Azamara Onward. The trip was broken up in to 10 segments. This one covered the coast of New Zealand from Aukland to Milford Sound. We had lots of stops, including Tauranga, which is the stepping off point for the Hobbiton Village, and Dunedin, near Larnach Castle, and on down to Hobart, Tasmania.

Here’s what I actually read, including a quick impression of each book and a link to download it if you’re planning to go to these places (on a plane or in an armchair, both are great ways to travel) and want to check them out. If you like this kind of thing check out the posts for the other legs.

The Hobbit by JRR Tolkien A classic I (and probably you) read back in the day. I listened to the condensed audiobook as we drove to Hobbiton as a booster shot. It made the day extra special for sure.

The Larnachs by Owen Marshall I found a copy of this in a used book store in Dunedin after visiting the Castle. What a story! It definitely gives you a feel for New Zealand and how it evolved, but it’s a crazy and true tale that involves intrigue, politics, and more than a spoonful of incest.

Flames by Robbie Arnott Mythical, lyrical and beautiful. And cheeky. This was a super fun read, and a beautiful portrait of Tasmania.

The Long Hitch Home by Jamie Maslin I wasn’t sure how I felt about this while I was reading it, but I think about it all the time. Maslin has opinions that a lot of people will be uncomfortable with, but honestly I liked riding along with him through his journey, and I appreciate his research and willingness to share some strong opinions and difficult truths. Plus he’s a true adventurer, which I adore.

Let me know if you try any of these out, and what other location based fiction you have loved. I’m always looking

Thanks so much for reading, and don’t forget to sign up for updates to follow along on the adventure!
